It’s Lent! The word means Spring”, but here in Coeur d' Alene it is snowing, yet we know with the season of Lent Spring is not far away. Whether it is five or six weeks away is not a major concern, but we must be deeply concerned about the next six weeks in our Church life, our journey of faith in this very serious time of Lent. Its conversion time! And yes, we Catholics need to be converted. We are to turn away from sin and darkness and turn to love and light. Each year we are given this time of intensified prayer, fasting and almsgiving to strengthen us to be better lovers of the Lord and one another, and to be a light to this somewhat darkened world in which we live. In our baptism we said no to Satan and yes to Christ Jesus. Like Jesus, the evil one can tempt us, but that is all it can do. Satan has no power over us. During this Lenten season we echo our baptismal promises loud and clear by allowing the Spirit of Jesus to lead us throughout these forty days of discipline. “The Kingdom of God is at hand. Repent and believe in the gospel.” (Mark 1:15)
