We have arrived! Our journey from Easter to Pentecost, lasting 50 days (Pentecost means 50) has brought us to the action of the Holy Spirit, the outpouring of the Spirit of the Living God upon His Church. This Spirit is love, this Spirit is fire; it is an anointing, a gentle breeze; this Spirit is power from on High! St Paul reminds us that “all of us have been given to drink of the one Spirit” (ICor:12:13) St Irenaeus of Lyons says that ” through baptism we have become one in body, through the Spirit we have become one in soul.” HAPPY BIRTHDAY CHURCH! Our Catholic tradition has always seen Pentecost as the birthday of the Church when it received new life in Christ Jesus. Our prayer echoes the thought expressed in the Sequence at Mass today: “shed a ray of light divine!” Let us pray for a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit on our Church, on those who have the gift of leadership and on the priestly people of God. May we truly become one in mind and heart as we pray in the second Eucharistic prayer: “that we may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit.” Praise God that we who have received the same Holy Spirit can say “Jesus is Lord!”…….Pentecost power my friends…..Fr.
